Tips for treatment day
- Dress casually and comfortably.
- Avoid wearing eye makeup and perfume or cologne before the procedure.
- Bring a friend - they can accompany you.
- Do not wear contacts for a period prior to the procedure. In the case
of gas permeable or hard lenses, they should not be worn for a month
prior to the procedure. If you wear soft lenses, they should not be
worn for two weeks prior to the procedure.
- Full payment is expected on treatment day. We have several payment
options and plans. Please discuss this with our refractive specialist.
Are you a candidate?
Typically patients who are at least 21 years of age who meet certain medical
and visual criteria are suitable. The best candidates tend to be people
who are dissatisfied with their contact lenses or glasses and are motivated
to make a change, whether it's due to occupational or lifestyle reasons.
There are certain medical conditions such as glaucoma, pregnancy, keratoconus,
etc. that may exclude a potential patient. We can advise you at the consultation.
Although many patients seek out laser vision correction simply because
they dislike wearing glasses, the treatment is more than a mere cosmetic
solution. The human eye tends towards dryness as we age, making the use
of contact lenses more uncomfortable. Certain types of employment require
excellent vision without corrective devices. In other jobs, the use of
glasses may be inconvenient.
Laser Correction Offers the potential to reduce dependence on
glasses and contact lenses or in many cases, eliminate them all together.
For those people who for whatever reason have never liked to wear corrective
lenses of any kind, it is an exciting, safe, and effective alternative.
How painful is the procedure?
The treatment itself is painless, although you may notice a sensation
in the eye or some discomfort in the first 24 hours after LASIK. With
Epi-LASIK there is discomfort for usually 1 to 3 days. Medication will
be prescribed to minimize any discomfort.
How long does the laser treatment take?
Depending upon the amount of correction required, the laser treatment
itself lasts about 15 to 120 seconds.
How soon can I go back to work?
Typically, surgery is done on Thursday. Most patients return to work on
Monday. With Epi-LASIK, vision is improves dramatically after the third
day. Vision gradually improves on a weekly basis and is fully healed by
6 to 9 months.
