LASIK

This refractive surgery (laser in-situ keratomileusis) procedure permanently changes the shape of the cornea. This procedure uses a microkeratome (flap-making instrument) with a disposable blade, to create a small corneal flap on the surface of the cornea. When this "hinged" flap is folded back, a small area of the cornea is exposed. The excimer laser is applied, ablating tissue and reshaping the corneal tissue. The flap is replaced and bonds without the need for stitches.
